THE WORK OF
THE HOLY SPIRIT
IN JESUS CHRIST
How the Holy Spirit Worked in Jesus
Christ.
Jesus Christ was
begotten by the Holy Spirit.
Luke 1:35 The angel answered, "The Holy
Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow
you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.
In regeneration the believer is begotten of God; Jesus Christ was begotten
of God in generation. He is the only begotten Son of God.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world
that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not
perish but have eternal life.
The regenerated man has the carnal nature received from his earthly father
and the new nature imparted by God. Jesus Christ had only the new holy nature.
He was, however, real man as he had a human mother.
Jesus Christ led
a holy, spotless life, and offered Himself to God, through the working of
the Holy Spirit.
Hebrews 9:14 How much more, then, will
the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished
to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we
may serve the living God!
Jesus Christ was
anointed for service by the Holy Spirit.
Acts 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of
Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good
and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with
him.
Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Sovereign
LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the
poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for
the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,
Luke 4:14, 18-19 [14] Jesus returned
to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through
the whole countryside. [18] "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because
he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim
freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release
the oppressed, [19] to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
Luke 3:21-22 [21] When all the
people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying,
heaven was opened [22] and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily
form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love;
with you I am well pleased."
Compare Luke 4:1, 14 [1] Jesus,
full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit
in the desert, [14] Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit,
and news about him spread through the whole countryside.
Jesus Christ was
led by the Holy Spirit in His movements.
Luke 4:1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,
returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert,
Jesus Christ was taught
by the Spirit who rested upon Him. The Spirit of God was the source of His
wisdom in the days of His flesh.
Isaiah 11:2 The Spirit of the LORD will
rest on him -- the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel
and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD
Matthew 12:17-18 [17] This was
to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: [18] "Here is
my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will
put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations."
John 1:33 I would not have known him,
except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, `The man on
whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with
the Holy Spirit.'
The words the Holy Spirit
spoke to Jesus were the words of God.
John 3:34 For the one whom God has sent
speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit.
Jesus Christ
gave instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles Jesus had
chosen.
Acts 1:1-2 [1] In my former book,
Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach [2] until
the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the
Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.
Jesus Christ performed
His miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 12:28 But if I drive out demons
by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
Jesus Christ was raised
from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:11 And if the Spirit of him
who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from
the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who
lives in you.
Practical Inferences from the Work of the Holy Spirit
in Jesus Christ.
Several things are evident from the study of the work of the Holy Spirit
in Jesus Christ.
(1) The completeness of His humanity. He lived, thought, worked,
taught, conquered sin and won victories for God in the power of that same
Spirit whom we may all have.
(2) Our dependence upon the Holy Spirit. If it was in the power
of the Holy Spirit that Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, lived,
worked and triumphed, how much mor are we dependent upon Him at every turn
of life, service and conflict with Satan and sin!
(3) The wondrous world of privilege, blessing, victory and conquest
that is open to us. The same Spirit by which Jesus was begotten is
at our disposal for us to be begotten of Him. The same Spirit by which Jesus
Christ offered Himself without spot to God is at our disposal for us to offer
ourselves without spot, the same Spirit by which Jesus was annointed for
service is at our disposal for us to be annointed for service, and so on
through all the points given above.
Jesus Christ is our pattern, the firstborn among many brethren. Whatever
He realized through the Holy Spirit is there for us to realize also.
Note: In biblical usage, the term "firstborn" does not mean
"the one born before all others". It means the one with the primary
right of inheritance.
1 John 2:5-6 [5] But if anyone
obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we
know we are in him: [6] Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus
did.
