When someone leaves money in a bank account, or an insurance company can't find the beneficiary of a insurance policy, etc., the company can't simply keep the money. It is considered abandoned property. The company must report it to the state, which publishes lists. If the owner is not found (usually within 10 years) the money goes to the state. Here is a list of such monies.
