THE PROBLEM

I majored in foreign languages in college, studying German, Spanish, and French to a certain extent.  Sometimes it is necessary to look up an ambiguous passage in other languages to see what it means, e.g., Isaiah 40:31 "Those who wait on the Lord ..." Does "wait on" mean (a) to tarry, to expect, or (b) to serve?  I looked up the word "wait" in a Strong's Concordance, and it is ambiguous: one of the meanings is given as: "wait (on, for, upon)".

So, I figured "Okay, I'll look it up in other languages."  However, although I can read other languages, I didn't know the names of the Bible books in those languages. With some searching I managed to find the names, so here is a cross-listing in the foreign languages most commonly known by Americans.

Incidentally, the passage from Isaiah means "to wait patiently, to wait with a confident expectation".  Contrary to what certain preachers have taught, in the original Hebrew there is no sense of "to serve".
